The third part of "The Forsyte Saga" opens with the interlude "Awakening", portraying the idyllic childhood of eight-year-old Jon Forsyte. In "To Let", Jon and Fleur Forsyte meet and fall in love, unaware of the painful history between their parents. Soames, Irene, and Jolyon oppose the relationship, fearing that the conflicts and possessiveness of the past will be repeated. Before his death, Jolyon writes Jon a letter revealing the truth about Irene’s marriage to Soames and warning that Irene would be left alone if Jon married Fleur. Jon sacrifices his love, rejects Fleur, and leaves for Canada, while Fleur marries Michael Mont despite not loving him. As the older Forsyte generation disappears, Soames is left to reflect on everything he tried to possess but never truly had.
