The second part of "The Forsyte Saga" opens with the interlude "Indian Summer of a Forsyte", depicting Old Jolyon’s final months and his tender friendship with Irene. "In Chancery" then follows the troubled marriages of Soames Forsyte and his sister Winifred, who seek separation from Irene and Montague Dartie. While Winifred takes her case to court, Soames refuses to release Irene and continues to pursue her obsessively. After inheriting money from Old Jolyon, Irene receives support from Young Jolyon, and their friendship gradually develops into love. Soames’s accusations bring them together and provide grounds for divorce, after which Irene and Jolyon marry and have a son, Jon. Soames marries the young Frenchwoman Annette, who gives birth to his daughter, Fleur.
