In Oscar Wilde’s “The Remarkable Rocket,” a vain rocket is convinced of his own extraordinary importance and imagines that the royal wedding is almost being celebrated in his honor. Because of his self-importance and exaggerated “sensitivity,” he becomes wet with his own tears, fails to go off during the fireworks display, and is thrown into a ditch. Even when he is finally lit by two boys and explodes unnoticed, he dies still believing that he has made a great impression.
