In Oscar Wilde’s "The Devoted Friend", kind-hearted little Hans believes the wealthy Miller is his best friend, even though the Miller constantly exploits his generosity while offering only fine words in return. Hans sacrifices his time, labor, and safety for the Miller’s demands, and his devotion ultimately leads to his death during a storm. The tale is a sharp moral satire about selfishness disguised as friendship.
