"The Man of Property" introduces the wealthy Forsyte family but centres on the unhappy marriage of possessive Soames and independent Irene. Seeking greater control over his wife, Soames commissions architect Philip Bosinney to build an isolated country house at Robin Hill. Irene and Bosinney fall in love and begin an affair, although he is engaged to June Forsyte. Meanwhile, Old Jolyon regrets rejecting his son Young Jolyon and decides to restore him as his heir. Irene leaves Soames, who wins a lawsuit against Bosinney and drives him into bankruptcy. Bosinney dies in an accident on a foggy London night, while Old Jolyon buys Robin Hill for his reunited family.
