After Waterloo, Amelia raises her son in poverty and remains devoted to George’s memory, while Dobbin quietly supports her before departing for India. Becky and Rawdon rise through fashionable society, living on credit and relying on her beauty, charm, and increasingly compromising relationship with the powerful Marquis of Steyne. Their glittering success collapses when Rawdon discovers Becky with Steyne, uncovers her concealed money, and leaves her, forcing her into a disreputable life of wandering across Europe. Years later, Dobbin and Jos return, young George receives an inheritance from his grandfather, and Amelia’s financial position is finally secured. In Germany, the group encounters the destitute Becky, whose return intensifies the long-standing conflict between Amelia’s idealized memory of George and Dobbin’s faithful love. By revealing George’s old letter inviting her to run away with him, Becky frees Amelia from her illusions and brings her together with Dobbin, while she herself survives the suspicious death of Jos and once again finds a place on the margins of respectable society.
